The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum opened in 1903 as Fenway Court, designed to resemble a 15th-century Venetian palace. Gardner inherited a large fortune in 1891 and began collecting art around the world, including by Vermeer, Botticelli, and Velázquez.
“To an art lover,” explained art thief Al Monday, “Possessing a Rembrandt can be likened to winning the World Series, the Super Bowl, and the Stanley Cup all at once.” Rembrandt’s The Storm on the Sea of Galilee is one of the Gardner’s missing paintings.
The mystery of the unsolved heist has only grown over the past 35 years. Many of the main suspects have died (with no deathbed confessions) and none of the art has been recovered despite a $10 million reward—the biggest bounty ever offered by any museum.
The case remains a source of fascination, spawning theories, books, and even a convention (CooperCon).
