It’s the night before Thanksgiving, 1971. “Stairway to Heaven” is on the radio; The French Connection is in theaters; and smoking is welcome on airplanes. Dan Cooper takes his seat on Northwest Orient Flight 305 and hands the flight attendant a note.
In the Disney+/Marvel Studios’ series Loki, Thor’s mischievous brother, Loki (played by actor Tom Hiddleston), is shown hijacking Northwest Orient Flight 305 as Dan Cooper.
Flight attendant Tina Mucklow later told the FBI that Cooper had simply explained to her, “It’s not because I have a grudge against your airlines; it’s just because I have a grudge.”
D.B. Cooper’s hijacking inspired more than a dozen copycats in the years that followed—all far less successful. And as a result, the FAA increased safety measures across U.S. airports, including mandatory bag searches and new metal detectors.
The case remains a source of fascination, spawning theories, books, and even a convention (CooperCon).
