The script for “Mortal Mysteries” provides a detailed narrative of the infamous D.B. Cooper case, an unresolved 1971 airplane hijacking. Here’s a summary:

Mortal Mysteries: Crime Throughout Time

The Lost Colony of Roanoke

On August 18, 1590, John White landed at Roanoke Island, in what is now the Outer Banks of North Carolina. He was returning to his family and over 100 colonists after sailing to England for supplies. But the settlement was empty. Everyone was gone. And only a mysterious word was left carved on a tree: “CROATOAN.” The colonists would never be found.

Picture This

It’s the end of the 16th century. The microscope is invented; the Gregorian calendar is adopted; and witch trials surge throughout Europe. Across the Atlantic, John White steps off his ship, excited to see his family after 3 years away.

Famous Names

Through a charter granted by Queen Elizabeth in 1584, the expedition to Roanoke was arranged by Sir Walter Raleigh. Raleigh never made the trip himself, yet the modern capital of North Carolina bears his name.

So They Say

The sixth season of American Horror Story, Ryan Murphy’s anthology series on FX, was subtitled Roanoke. Starring Kathy Bates and Sarah Paulson, it featured present-day hauntings by ghosts of the Lost Colony.

The Legacy

Seventeen years after the Lost Colony vanished, Jamestown was founded in Virginia, supplanting Roanoke as the first permanent English settlement in the New World. Thirteen years after that, the Mayflower and its renegade Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock.

Legacy

The case remains a source of fascination, spawning theories, books, and even a convention (CooperCon).
